Effectively managing Product Development and R&D requires a diverse set of skills and disciplines. To know what to build requires a solid understanding of the market, customer needs, competitive forces and no small degree of creativity. Product development itself requires the right mix of engineering skills and development processes, as well as a good understanding of what to develop new, what to re-use from prior work and what to license or leverage from third parties. Because the two dominant disciplines of the product realization process – product management and engineering – are so interdependent, using a new product creation process that pushes these disciplines closer together is best. Following are what I believe to be best practices in developing plans for what to build, best practices in execution of development programs, and the best processes to tie it all together. I will start with processes and organization in order to simplify the discussion.
